Approach
Operating business
Not a refurbishment
01 — Overview
The Echo Building is a 70,000 sq ft Grade II listed Art Deco landmark in the heart of Bournemouth, formerly home to the Daily Echo newspaper.
70,000 sq ft repositioned as an operating workspace business with 400+ members.
02 — A business, not a refurbishment
Rather than treating the building as a conventional office refurbishment, THAT repositioned it as an operational workspace business, retaining its architectural character while creating flexible workspace, meeting rooms, event spaces and communal areas around a new way of using the building.
Today, the building accommodates more than 400 workspace members.
03 — The principle
The project demonstrates the same principle that runs through THAT DM’s hospitality work: start with the business, understand how people will use the building and let that shape the development.
It is regeneration measured not simply by completion, but by whether the building has a viable purpose afterwards.
